A ROMANTIC TRADITION

The celebration of wedding anniversaries is linked to both the Medieval German and Holy Roman empires, when a husband would crown his wife with an ornate silver garland on the 25th anniversary, and a garland of gold on their 50th anniversary.

The twentieth century saw the commercialisation of the celebration, in which gift-giving traditions became associated with wedding anniversaries, even to the extent where specific materials of the gift became related to the number of years of marriage. For example, the 1st anniversary = paper, and the 2nd anniversary = cotton. You can find out more in our section on Anniversary Gifts by Year.

In the Commonwealth realms of the United Kingdom, one can apply to Buckingham Palace or the office of the Governor-General within other Commonwealth nations, to be sent a message of congratulations and good wishes from the Monarchy for the 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries.

Those of the Roman Catholic faith may apply via their local district for a special blessing by the Pope on hallmark wedding anniversaries, such as the 25th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries.
